Thrifting Denver

Goodwill Etiquette

Today I thought we would go over a little Goodwill Etiquette.  While shopping it is important to recognize that the FIRST person to see a great item and pick them up has FIRST DIBS on said item.  However, like most rules, this one has an exception.  If the FIRST person finds an amazing item, but is too chicken to wear “used” shoes, then the second shopper has rights to them, and may take possession at said time.

The second shopper just used some Mrs. Meyers Basil Scented Laundry Detergent along with some oxygen crystals and soaked them in an adorable vintage bucket overnight, once dry you can spritz some alcohol on the inside for additional anti-bacterial protection.  Aaaaaaallll cleeeannnn.

Ok, this graphic should say, “Katie “The Intern” found these adorable Sperry Top Siders, but since she was new to thrifting and was too chicken to wear them I got dibs” but it wouldn’t fit.

So here we are in our office (Starbucks) with our Sparkalicious Sperry Top Siders.

Gray/Silver $7.00 Goodwill.

White/Clear $70.00 Nordstrom.

**Follow up. Katie is a thrift pro now and is ready for “used” shoes. I am not giving them up.

  1. Thank you for posting this!!! I have been so skitterish when it has come to buying shoes from a thrift shop. Now I am a little more open to the idea. :)

  2. If it’s something I can’t spray down with bathroom cleaner foaming bubbles (that’s what I use) then I’ll just wipe out the insides with a disinfectant wipe. Then spray with a disinfectant spray that rhymes with Mysol. ;-)
Like the awesome pair of Keen sandals I got my husband! Sprayed with foaming bubbles. Rinse. Repeat and scrub with a brush. Let dry in the sun. $80 sport sandals for $8!!! I’ll take it!

  3. I wear Keen knockoffs in the pool for water aerobics, so I can see soaking those. I have lots of 10 plus year old Cole Haan loafers. They are suddenly $300 or more, so I keep getting them resoled, etc. The cobbler (I’m from New England) says that older shoes are better made than the same brand made today. I go to Beall’s a lot when I am in Florida. I got a pair of Sperry leopard hair calf trimmed with black patent leather boat shoes for $30, after all the discounts that they give. Regular price $90. My best purchase this summer was a pair of blue flowered boat shoes from aldoshoes.com. They still have them on sale. I almost got two pair of Ferragamo short boots at the end of the winter for $8 each, but I didn’t know anyone that wears size 10. Now I know, Aunt Peaches! What’s the difference if I find something in my closet that I haven’t worn in 10 years, or find it at Goodwill? Sometimes I think the people that are overly squeamish about second hand stuff (not the intern!) probably don’t change their sheets and towels for two weeks. I like having old stuff, all spanking brand new things whisper “nouveau.” But then, you know I’m crazy.

  4. I need those!

  5. Dearest DeeAnna,

Does this Goodwill etiquette apply to really cool red, white and blue ice buckets too? (wink, wink)

    Just wondering,

    The Goodwill Gal

    • Dear Goodwill Gal,
Thank you for your question. I do believe you are referring to another common thrifting malady and that is called, “thrift envy”. We will be covering that on Wednesday’s blog, please tune in.

BTW I neeeeded that ice bucket!!!

  6. That vintage bucket kinda looks like a chamberpot.
