Remember that time I found three pair of colored denim jeans at Goodwill? I washed them right up and they fit…sort of. They fit for about 6 minutes at which time they stretched out and looked baggy-saggy. Not cute. I passed them on to a friend and tried to figure out plan B. Along comes Pinterest with this great Dye Your Own Jeans! DIY. So we tried it.
Here’s how it went.
Step One.

Buy some denim at Goodwill. Don’t spend too much. 99cent day would be perfect!!

Next, you will want to buy some Clorox Bleach on super clearance. Then put your Hazmat gear on so you look like you are filming an episode of Breaking Bad.

You have to bleach the denim before you can dye it. We used a four to one ratio of bleach to water, so the denim would not disintegrate.

In goes two pair of jeans and one jean jacket.

We covered it up so no one could get into the bleach mixture. You have to be very careful around kids and pets!!

Swishhshh it around every few hours so that all of the denim will be bleached evenly.

THREE LONG DAYS LATER…no joke…Three Days! Who has time for that? I digress. Now you will need to rinse your denim in warm water.

So your denim may not look “white” it most likely be shades of bleached out yellowed denim.

YaaaY! Time to use the fabric dye. We chose Intense Violet! and Sure Saffire!

This is our color inspiration.

Look how beautiful! The packet said to soak it for 45 minutes. We went for the 24 hour look.

Waaa….Waaa. Insert sad trombone here. Cute, but not what we were looking for. We were looking for solid color, not spotchedy-tie-dye. The good news is that if you like the over-dyed denim look these will be re-donated to Goodwill for you to buy! We didn’t spend too much money giving something a try.
We didn’t dye the jean jacket, we left it bleached. It looked great! Stay tuned for photos.

Good idea! I have dyed some Goodwill finds too. I think your problem might be that you did not agitate the fabric the whole time it was in the dye. I use Rit dye and you definitely have to agitate or it will get splotchy. Also, I am not sure how well dye takes to bleached fabric. Maybe try using white or very light colored jeans to start?

Well you tried which way more then I would of done.
Now I know I won’t be dying my Goodwill jeans and expect then to be perfect. You did all the hard work (insert happy sound).

Next time, try “weighing” the fabric down with some glass jars headed to the recycling bin. You had air bubbles caught in the fabric, which caused it to float toward the top & not dye as evenly.
